Do you know what time is it? Well, we don’t mean that in terms of the actual time on the clock. If you’ve just gotten home from work, gotten dinner on the stove, and gotten the children taken care of, there’s only one time that it could be: TV time!
OK, we get it — in today’s digital society, TV is so 1990. Yeah, we understand — but we bet you’re still going to watch it, right? You’re still going to plop right down on the couch and watch that TV as much as you can.
What is it about TV that makes it still so alluring, still so compelling, even though just about everyone and their dog has a computer with more content than you can shake a stick at? Well, in a nutshell, it’s all about familiarity. We grew up watching TV, we settle in with our kids to watch TV, and who hasn’t done a “TV date” — takeout and re-runs, anyone?
Yes, TV definitely has a place in our world, and it’s a place that’s definitely here to stay. If you’re looking for a few good shows to watch, you might want to check out these five TV shows right now:
1. Bones — If you thought that David Boreanaz was only good for looking dark and brooding on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, you truly have underestimated this actor. He’s actually a pretty good detective. Bones takes the crime show formula and flips it around, adding in better interaction between characters, as well as more focus on science than just about any other crime drama. There’s also more love interest angles, which means that you can actually watch the show with your girlfriend and still look macho. Now that’s hot!
2. Two and a Half Men – Charlie Sheen, Charlie Sheen, Charlie Sheen — oh, and did we mention Charlie Sheen? Did we mention hot women? Did we mention comedy at its best? We thought so — and that’s really all you need to know about Two and a Half Men — comedy, Charlie Sheen, and hot women. Now go watch it!
3. Law & Order — There are few shows that have been around as long as Law & Order. Even though there are several flavors of the show running right now, it’s pretty hard to determine which one is our favorite. The Special Victims Unit is a great series, but the dramas are a lot more intense — it deals with a lot of highly sensitive topics, like cases that involve women and children. It can be a bit too much for some people, but the interaction between characters still makes the entire franchise worth looking into, no matter which flavor interests you. Characters do tend to come and go every now and then, so it’s best not to fall too much in love with them.
4. Hell’s Kitchen — We had to throw in some light fare here among all of these dramas and crime shows. Hell’s Kitchen is funny because it’s one trainwreck after another, and everyone knows it. In fact, the only person that takes it seriously is Gordon Ramsay, and half the time he looks like he doesn’t take it very seriously at all. The American version of the show seems like a big chance for Gordon to stomp all over TV and swear, while the audience watches contestants screw things up in a major way. If you want real cooking fare, you would do far better with Top Chef or Chopped on Food Network. If you want to just watch people burn stuff, Hell’s Kitchen really is the hell of your choice.
5. CSI: Miami — OK, out of all of the different CSI franchises, we like it Miami style. The cases are more intense, the interaction between the characters is much more real, and who hasn’t made fun of Horatio Caine? For the show that makes you want to put on sunglasses and scream at the top of your lungs, it just doesn’t get better than CSI. Now, if you haven’t tuned into CSI before, keep in mind that it’s going to be a bit bloodier than you might have expected. This really isn’t going to be one that you will want to watch during the dinner hour, but the detective cases are still interesting. High drama at its best.
OK, here we go again: we know you’re a TV buff. Really. Some of these shows may not be on right now, but they’re bound to come back around for another season. If they’ve been taken off the air, that’s where Netflix and other TV show rental portals come in. You can always rent a season DVD of a show that you’ve always meant to catch, which means that you’ll be able to watch it on your terms — that’s almost better than TiVo!
Naturally, we had some that we wanted to add to the list. If you’re looking for more, there’s always Criminal Minds, Dexter, Weeds, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, more CSI, Burn Notice, and Lie to Me — and that’s just touching the tip of the TV show iceberg.
What shows are you currently head over heels, knock down in love with right now? Sound off in the comments — if your show rocks the house and is popular, we might add it to another list!
